Today, the 27th of October, is the UNESCO World Day of Audiovisual Heritage, a day on which we acknowledge the importance of preserving stories, captured in sound and images, for future generations. The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision celebrates by storing an iconic fragment of Dutch audiovisual history in a both ancient and state of the art storage medium: DNA.
Digital information, stored on digital storage devices, has led to unprecedented possibilities for access and analysis of audiovisual collections. This digital archive however needs constant care. We diligently monitor the bits and bytes of our collection to make sure no information gets lost over the years. Digital tapes for storage must be replaced at least every decade. But we cannot stop there. We need alternatives that will allow us to archive historical memories for hundreds or even thousands of years. DNA a unique storage solution that provides a path to stable, hands-off, long-term storage of enormous amounts of digital information.
DNA can store five full length films in a volume equivalent to one grain of salt. Current storage technologies all have limited lifetimes, requiring constant maintenance and/or replacement, and this drives up the total cost of ownership. DNA data storage has the potential to deliver a true low-cost archival data storage solution. Low cost is achieved through miniaturization of the production DNA synthesis process and it is archival because it lasts for thousands of years when properly stored – hermetically packaged and stored at room temperature. Additionally, the required storage space is 50 to 100 times less than required for other technologies, so it is incredibly compact; the storage format is timeless; and it is easy to copy due to the magic of biology.
“Over the several next years, we are working to dramatically reduce costs for writing DNA to store digital data, making it feasible for large-scale application in the archival field,” said Emily Leproust, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Twist Bioscience.
“DNA-storage highlights the importance of the long-term, sustainable preservation of our collection,” says Sound and Vision CEO Eppo van Nispen tot Sevenaer. “By being an early adopter of this new technology , we make sure that Sound and Vision continues to operate at the cutting edge of technology while taking as much care as we can for our national audiovisual heritage.”
Sound and Vision will collaborate with Twist Bioscience, an innovator in DNA synthesis, to store the images celebrating the Dutch football team of the 1988 European Championship for 10.000 years to come... in a tiny tube containing the images stored in DNA molecules.
